Andrea Maragno

Design without design

On 29th and 30th October Fabrica will host a workshop with Andrea Maragno, Zen monk and designer.

Description: “Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness is no other than form; form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form (Heart Sutra – Maka Hannya Haramita Shingyo)
Zen is a very creative methodology, and one of its instruments are koan (a sort of paradoxical sentences) that undermine our logical and rational principles to bring us to be and think “differently”, in our own way – which is rationally unknown to us. Zen can help to have new, different visions. This is the reason why Andrea Maragno has decided to create a relation between Zen and design. Beauty, creativity, aesthetics require emptiness to make their way within our souls, and, thanks to zazen (sitting meditation), we can create them in a natural way.

Andrea Maragno is the owner of JoeVelluto (JVLT), a design and communication studio located in Vicenza. In 2002 it entered the competition “Opos Under 35” with “RosAria,” disposable rosary beads made from bubblewrap, the studio’s first official project which soon became part of a number of permanent design collections both in Italy and abroad. The following is a list of the studio’s most significant events: in 2006, together with C. Morozzi, it launched the communications project “Nazionale Italiana Design” alongside a new brand called “CoincasaDesign”, curated by JoeVelluto(JVLT), received a honour mention from international jury of XXII Compasso d’Oro ADI Prize; since 2006 it has worked on projects for display design and installations for Pitti Immagine; in 2011 Solo exhibition “funcooldesign” curated by Oliviero Toscani, Triennale Design Museum, Milan. He currently does consulting as well as artistic coordination for several firms and since 2015 is the director of studies of Scuola Italiana Design, a brand of Science and Technology Park of Padova.
