Character creation with Mariscal

Javier Mariscal (Valencia, 1950) is, first and foremost, an image creator who develops his work using all kinds of supports and disciplines. Furniture design, interior design, graphic design, landscaping, painting, sculpture, illustration, web design, multimedia and animation are part of his professional activity.
In his own words “My specialty is being creative, innovative, making language go as far as possible, trying to develop codes, signs and graphic messages. Bringing them up to date. Listening, absorbing, observing, expressing what society is breathing in images”.
In 1999 he won the “Premio Nacional de Diseño”. His work has been exhibited at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris and presented in several retrospectives, like “Mariscal Drawing Life” at the London Design Museum, “Mariscal en La Pedrera” and “The Art Player” in Korea. His illustrations and comics strips invade covers and pages in “The New Yorker”, “El Pais” and the Japanese magazine “Apo”.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Throughout his long career Javier Mariscal has created hundreds of characters with very different goals and motives, and for fields as diverse as comics, illustration, graphic design, industrial and textile, mascots, logos, animation, cinema, video clips, websites, exhibitions.
For each new creation, the author analyzes the project or the assignment, defines its frames, documents extensively, and finally begins to generate an astonishing multitude of sketches, tests, in a frantic search to find the perfect solution for his new creature, and that through his amazing stroke and his inexhaustible visual imagination.
In this workshop Mariscal will present his work process for the creation of characters, and will reveal his methods and techniques to “give birth” to beings such as Cobi, Twipsy, Los Garriris, El Señor Mundo, Lula, Julián or Chico y Rita.
Guided by Mariscal, participants will create their own characters, developing them with the author and giving them a specific format – portfolio, vignette and / or animation- with the aim of presenting them publicly to the class and establishing a critical discussion around them, in a debate full of ideas, inspiration and humor.
