Memory Trace

An exhibition by Daniel Benítez at Fabrica Features Lisbon

7 settembre 2017

From 16 September to 4 October 2017 Fabrica Features Lisbon will host Memory Trace, an exhibition by Daniel Benitez, an illustrator from Mexico currently working at Fabrica.

September 16, the day opening of the exhibition, coincides with the Independence Day of Mexico. In this occasion, Daniel Benitez will guide the visitors through a participative performance revealing the artworks on show.

Curiosity and intervention of the public is the cornerstone of Memory Trace. The series of posters illustrate violent facts which happened in Mexico in the last 50 years, such as the massacres of Tlatelolco in 1968 and Acteal in 1997; attacks against women from 1993 and against journalists from the year 2000; the Narco War that started in 2006 and the 2014 Iguala mass kidnapping. All these incidents marked the history and the contemporary context of Mexico. For this reason, the artist aims to trigger the collective memory and global conscience through the language of graphic arts and illustration.

The exhibition presents a series of six silkscreen print posters, which are blank. The visitor can discover the imagery by spreading charcoal on the poster. Staining the artwork with hands creates a conversation between the work and the audience. This trace of dirt becomes a metaphorical sign of awareness and memory. Each poster is a limited edition of 25 copies and is available for purchase at Fabrica Features for all the duration of the show.
