Against the good and against the victims: this is the title of the free workshop that film director Andrea Segre will hold at Fabrica on 5th and 6th February. Segre will present practices and products of the “cinema of reality” that will help understand how to tell stories of migrations and the social changes connected to them, avoiding the use of the emotional mechanisms of humanitarian marketing.
In the last 20 years several practical and experimental attempts have been made in order to try to get out of this impasse, in which both spectators and victims feel helpless and passive, which leads them to rely on a hero, who acts under the flag of good to solve the situation. One of the most efficient ways to reach this goal is the collective communication, and Segre’s cinema is linked to this approach: discover a new point of view and accompany the spectator in the change that this involves.
With the help of extracts taken from three films (Mare Chiuso by Stefano Liberti and Andrea Segre, Ibi by Andrea Segre and with images by Ibitocho Sehounbiatou and Les Sauteurs by Moritz Siebert, Estehan Wagner and Abou Bakar Sidibé), Segre will reflect with the participants about the relational and production process on which they are based, on the aesthetics and content related aspects, and on the communicative effect that the final product may have.
Beside this, on Monday, 5th February at 7:30pm Fabrica auditorium will host the screening of the documentary Ibi, in which Segre follows the steps of a woman born in Benin and migrated to Italy, mixing his own scenes with those shot by Ibi herself to let her children in Africa know about her new life in Italy.
Andrea Segre, a founding partner of Zalab, is a film and documentary director. For over ten years he has been interested in, and produced work on the topic of migration. He’s directed two feature films: Io sono Li (winner of several international awards and distributed in over 45 countries) and La Prima Neve (Orizzonti section at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival). His documentaries have obtained prestigious awards and acknowledgements at different editions of the Venice International Film Festival, at Torino Film Festival, David di Donatello, Locarno Festival and at Nastri d’Argento. Segre has a PhD in Sociology of Communication.
These events are part of the activities of Fabrica Circus, a continuous cycle of conferences, performances, “confessions”, workshops, concerts, and exhibitions, all of which aim to experiment in modern communication, that will officially be launched at Fabrica on 26th January.
