From the 24th of February to the 25th of March 2012, Fabrica Features Lisbon will present Vera, Chapter One, a multi-disciplinary show evolving around a fictional character. Orchestrated by Kirsty Minns (KM), one of the young designers hosted at Fabrica, and French designer Érika Muller (ÉM). This first chapter, was launched during the London Design Festival in September 2011 and is part of an on-going project.
Exploring a literacy approach to design, this exhibition will show a surprising and eclectic body of work, including product design, illustration, graphics and olfactory design, by some emerging international talent.
Stepping away from the mass-market design approach which mainly produces for the average and standard end-consumer, the initial thinking process behind each of these pieces is a response to one individual. And that individual is Vera. Vera is a fictional character based on a series of photographs from a girl’s family found a few years ago in a second hand shop in Brighton. This group of artists and designers have been commissioned to respond to one image from the series in order to create the first chapter of Vera’s fictive and collaborative biography.
Vera’s material and sensorial world is brought into reality through this speculative body of work. The exhibition room is her intimate space into which the visitor is invited to discover an original series of suppositional artifacts.

Kirsty Minns and Érika Muller first met in 2008 at Established & Sons, a well renowned British furniture manufacturer. Whilst working together over three years on high scale projects and events based in the UK as well as abroad, Érika and Kirsty discovered a common likeness for ‘out of the norm’ projects. Rich of their complimentary experience covering a wide spectrum of the Design processes – Product Design, Product Development, Art Direction and Visual Communication – Kirsty and Érika are teaming up for this first exhibition ‘Vera Chapter One’ inviting a series of talented creatives to play around a shared theme. The project was born out of their mutual desire to create an exhibition that could be used as a medium to stimulate discussion and debate as well as celebrate a narrative approach to the world of design.

Gao Brothers, Gao Zhen and Gao Qiang, are the authors and editors of several published works, including “One Day In Beijing”, “The State Of China Avant-Garde” and “The Report Of Art Environment”. They have been collaborating on installation, performance, photography works and writing to explore issues of contemporary life and society since the mid 1980s.
Gao Brothers carried out their first group hug performance, "The Utopia Of Hugging For Twenty Minutes" on September 10, 2000 by inviting one hundred and fifty volunteers, who were previously strangers to each other, to take part in the event. They asked all participants to choose a person at random for a hug of fifteen minutes duration. Afterwards, all participants huddled together for an additional five minutes. They are proposing an ongoing series of World Hug Day events around the globe via the internet, and so far have got enormous feedback and support.
Since 2000, Gao Brothers have hugged hundreds of strangers and organized group hugging performances with strangers at many public locations in different ways and have taken a lot of interesting photographs.
