The photo reportage Rainbowland shot by Kitra Cahana for Colors 76 Teenagers has obtained the 1st Prize Stories in the World Press Photo’s Art and Entertainment section.
The Rainbow Family is a non-hierarchical group that holds free gatherings around the world. In July 2009 they brought 25,000 people together for a week in the wilderness in New Mexico, U.S.. Kitra was there for Colors.
Kitra Cahana is a young emerging documentary photographer who had an early start in her career when, at the age of 17, while photographing the Israeli Disengagement from Gaza, one of her photographs landed on the front page of the New York Times. In 2007 she worked at the New York Times as the Thomas Morgan photographic intern and later in the year received a one-year scholarship at Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research in Italy. During her period at Fabrica she worked on stories around the world for Colors magazine, including on the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu and Niue and in DR Congo and Kenya. She recently graduated from McGill University with a B.A. in philosophy and is presently the 2009 photographic intern at National Geographic.
