From 7 to 11 September Recognition will be one of the protagonists of Ars Electronica, an internationally unique platform for digital art and media culture, taking place in Postcity Linz, Austria. The theme of this year is “Artificial Intelligence – The Other I”.
Recognition is an artificial intelligence project created by Fabrica, winner of IK Prize 2016, a contest launched by Tate celebrating creative talent in the digital industry.
Over three months from 2 September to 27 November 2016, Recognition created an ever-expanding virtual gallery by searching through Tate’s archive and collection of British art online, comparing works with news images from Reuters based on visual and thematic similarities. A display at Tate Britain accompanied the online project offering visitors to the gallery the chance to compare the machine’s matches with their own and inviting them to help retrain the algorithm.
