Following the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival “DERAGLIAMENTI”, THE RECENT DOCUMENTARY FROM FABRICA, FEATURES AT THE FIRST ANTHOLOGICAL EXHIBITION ON MILO MANARA
Opening in Siena from 1 October 2011 to 8 January 2012
Treviso, September 2011. Fabrica, Benetton Group's creative laboratory, contributes to the “Milo Manara – Le Stanze del Desiderio” [rooms of desire] exhibition, presenting the trailer for the documentary Deragliamenti,in which Milo Manara tells the story of hisartistic collaboration with another great master, Federico Fellini.
The exhibition is a dreamlike, multi-sensory path, immersing visitors in the sensual universe of Milo Manara's career, seeking to offer a broader interpretation of the boundless production of the man who is universally acknowledged as one of the great masters of eroticism, and of illustration as a whole. Visitors will enter a series of actual "rooms", where extracts of audio and video, digital images and, of course, his original drawings and illustrations, will bring them up close and personal with the topics dearest to the Veronese artist. Almost seamlessly, each "room" will present one of Manara's fundamental themes, from the exploration of pure adventure, through his alter ego Giuseppe Bergman, to two major figures of reference in the artist's personal and professional journey: Hugo Pratt and Federico Fellini.
This is where the documentary Deragliamenti fits in, with Milo Manara revealing the long-held, memory-rich secrets and details of his collaboration with Federico Fellini, to transform the screenplay of the Fellini's film Il Viaggio di Mastorna detto Fernet into a comic strip.
Described as “the most famous film never made”, Il Viaggio di Mastorna detto Fernet narrates the journey of a cello-playing clown wandering through the afterlife, and the project was described by Fellini himself as “the story of a dead man who is not yet aware of being so”. Fellini's decision to abandon the project immediately before it was to start filming is shrouded in mystery, but it probably has to do with the fact that it somehow forced him to confront the truth of his own mortality.
At the age of seventy-two, Fellini undertook this collaboration with Milo Manara, his long-standing friend, on Il Viaggio, choosing to illustrate it as a comic strip: a way of exorcising the unresolved burden that still weighed on the project. Ironically, Il Viaggio was to be Fellini's last work before his death in 1993.
Deragliamenti is produced entirely by Fabrica and directed by Chelsea McMullan, a young Canadian resident in the video department, who has already won awards at numerous international festivals for her documentaries and experimental videos.
