FABRICA AND STUDIO LA CITTA' TOGETHER FOR 6x6 WOMEN
The world seen through the lenses of six young female photographers from Fabrica on view in Verona.
Fabrica, Benetton’s creative workshop, and Studio la Città present, under the auspices of Verona Town Council, 6x6 Women, a series of six photographic exhibitions that will be shown in turn in the gallery from 21 November 2009 to the end of January 2010.
This collaboration was formed with the aim of casting our gaze over the world about us, giving prominence to the work of a number of young female photographers who have lived, or are currently living, in Fabrica.
The outcome is a portrayal of reality which dwells on a number of aspects of the world around us that usually stay in the shadows. Using an approach typical of Fabrica, this exhibition casts a light on the rest of the world and brings us closer to hidden people whonever emerge into the spotlight yet have so much to say.
Laia Abril, who is Spanish, took pictures of a lesbian couple in New York; British photographer Liz Hingley went to Birmingham, a multiethnic, multicultural city, to examine how different ethnic groups and religions co-exist; American Kitra Cahana studied the life of women in a few ultra-orthodox Jewish environments in the village of Uman, Ukraine; Canadian Jennifer Osborne followed the progress of two Brazilian women released from a Rio de Janeiro prison and caught their initial disorientation as they went back to life on the outside; Leonie Purchas, British, looked at the different lifestyles of the Villamil family, which is geographically split between the United States and Cuba but united in the traditions of their common origins; lastly, Olivia Arthur examined the condition of living in different cultures at the same time in her photos of young women who divide their lives between Europe and the Middle East.
Studio la Città opened in Verona in 1969. It initially held exhibitions of the work of such artists as Lucio Fontana, Piero Dorazio, Mario Schifano and Gianni Colombo. Since the late ‘80s, after the passing of Neo-expressionism, the gallery has concentrated on artists who study chromatic minimalism in keeping with the quiet, intimate research which has characterised the gallery’s choices in recent times. Gabriele Basilico, Alberto Garutti, Pierpaolo Calzolari, Ettore Spalletti and Giulio Paolini are among the contemporary classics which the gallery has showcased in recent years. Moreover, Studio la Città has recently shown works by Victor Alimpiev, Jacob Hashimoto, Arthur Duff, Hiroyuki Masuyama and Hema Upadhyay: artists who seem to use very different forms of expression but in reality are united in their research into new, unexpected expressive formulas.
