TWO FABRICA GRANTHOLDERS SELECTED IN BRAZIL FOR THE 2ND SAO PAOLO DIGITAL ART SHOW
Fabrica, August 2011. Two Fabrica grantholders, Brazilian Paulo Barcelos and US Jacqueline Steck, have been selected for the second edition of the Digital Art Show of Sao Paolo in Brazil, which will run from September 2nd to October 2nd 2011.
The exhibition displays a selection of works that use different media but the same technology. The works exploit interactivity and the observer, who, by interacting with the work itself, completes the artistic creation. The show’s aim is to highlight how closely art and technology are connected and how attractive they can be for all types of people.
Colors of Movement is an application that Paulo Barcelos developed during his internship at Fabrica:it is an interactive experience that plays with movement and colour. Like a sort of magic mirror, it separates the image of a person moving in front of it into three different layers, a yellow, a red and a blue one.As soon as the person stops moving, the three layers of colour are once more superimposed on each other and the image becomes one again. The installation is used as an interactive application in selected Benetton mega stores for the project Benetton Live Windows, and there is also an online version, available at www.colorsofmovement.net.
The Look of Love is an installation that changes literally in the bat of an eye. Simply bring your face close to the two peepholes and look through them: you will see a banknote, but as soon as you bat your eyes the image changes, as does the version of the song “The Look of Love”, which you can hear in the background. The unconscious act of batting your eyelids becomes part of the game, evoking the metaphor of money that changes in an instant.
Both works were created between 2009 and 2010 during the artists’ residence at Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research centre. Founded in 1994 with the objective of blending culture and industry,Fabrica offers internships to young artists/designers; they receive an annual scholarship, the opportunity to train, and a wealth of resources and relationships with which, under the guidance of experts, they can develop cultural and social communication projects in the fields of design, visual communication, photography, interaction, video, music and publishing.
