Steve Moreau and Sandra Liliana Sanchez

Public lecture July 25 2008

When she was only nine, Sandra Liliana Sanchez decided that things had to change in her Bogota neighbourhood. So she started fighting the poverty and squalor around her. With her steely determination and the help of human-rights associations she succeeded, in just a few years and still very young, in opening Oasis. Oasis is a centre open to children and young and mature adults where they can study, play, dance, eat a hot meal, get medical care.

On July 25, Sandra was Fabrica’s guest, together with French producer Steve Moreau, at a public conference to present Sandra’s Paradise, a documentary directed by Marianne Roussy, about the 22-year-old Colombian who, since childhood, has written to politicians, contacted the authorities and worked with human-rights associations in an effort to improve the living conditions in the ghetto neighbourhood she moved to with her family.

The lecture was followed by a screening of the documentary, which shows Sandra’s daily existence and her exceptional life experience. She is guided by her determination to do something to change things in her country. Despite Colombia’s general prosperity, many of its people still find it hard to keep up with modern life and end up on the margins of society.
