Touchstones and Stamps
Touchstones is an installation crafted from stones, symbolizing the journey of life. Inspired by the shape of the classical labyrinth, which holds significance in various religions and movements globally, the form has been reinterpreted and tailored to fit Fabrica’s unique space. The path, carefully laid out on the lawn, invites contemplation and introspection, guiding visitors toward a profound understanding of themselves and others. Observable from afar, it also offers the opportunity for immersive experiences, where individuals can engage in active meditation by walking its intricate paths.
A collection of stamps, each bearing messages created with typography and colors, is displayed on the cement walls. Printed in poster size, these stamps serve as conduits of connection, transmitting profound sentiments from past Fabrica residents to future generations. In the typography, original quotes are included in small sizes on each stamp, while selected phrases that resonated with Egoshina more deeply are emphasized in larger sizes and more crafty typography compositions. The graphics are bright and colorful, creating a striking contrast with the concrete walls. With quotes sourced from diverse voices of fabricanti across cultures, countries, and generations, the project transcends boundaries, uniting individuals in a tapestry of shared experiences and aspirations. By working with ideas from past generations and reclaiming them in this new context, the project contributes to the Fabrica30 reunion and addresses the concept of kinship, blending past insights with contemporary design practice.
Artist’s statement
Drawing from graphic design experience, this work is viewed as a blend of forms, typography, and colors. Playing around with these elements often leads me to something interesting: the project began in fact with an exploration of the stamp form and experimenting with various color combinations, then incorporating layers of typography. What started as minor doodles evolved into a project about messages: from them to me, from me to you.
