Birdhouses

Birdhouses

Birdhouses is an installation made of birdhouses that echoes the times when Tavare was a child and his greatest desire was to fly. To grow wings and fly far, far away into the infinite blue sky. In the Dominican Republic, the word pájaro is used as a derogatory slur to target LGBTQ+ people. Despite its negative cultural connotation, the word translates literally as bird. So, as a queer kid, for him it always seemed strange to think of this word.

Artists statement

My artistic project aims to address the lack of diverse representations in childhood. When creating moving images, I celebrate the beauty and diversity of human experiences, with a particular focus on love beyond heteronormativity. I envision a world where children are seen as active participants in political and social discussions, allowed to voice their perspectives, and treated with equality and respect, without restrictive limitations imposed in the name of protection.
