Institute for Postnatural Studies / Listening to Postnature

On Thursday, 1 February at 7pm CET, Yuri Tuma, brazilian multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of “Institute for Postnatural Studies”, will be at Fabrica for a talk titled “Listening to Postnature”.

During the conference, the artist will unfold different approaches, both theoretical and material to facilitate our understanding of the environment. He will particularly focus on the Phonocene, described by Donna Haraway and Vinciane Despret as a possible era of sound, in which listening is claimed as a vehicle to access new ways of inhabiting the territory and the current ecological crisis. From this perspective, the basis for the implementation of new ecologies of coexistence is based on actively listening to the voices of those around us, human and non-human, artificial and organic, imagined and real. Research, field recording and sound art thus emerge as important artistic and performative practices so that we move away from the supremacy of the visual, and practice empathy, care and sensitivity towards “otherness”.

Yuri Tuma’s artistic practice is focused on the reevaluation of the human/animal binomial imposed by science and Western thinking, through installations, sound art and performances.

In early 2020, he co-founded the Institute for Postnatural Studies (IPS) in Madrid, a center for artistic experimentation that focused on the relationship between the contemporary artistic practice and the needed revision of the concept of nature. Thanks to artists and researchers, the Institute develops long-term research focused on issues such as ecology, coexistence, politics, and territories, that take different shapes and formats, including seminars, exhibitions, and residencies as spaces for academic and artistic experimentation.

Yuri Tuma also coordinates “Cthulhu Books”, the Institute’s publishing project whose aim is to imagine new worlds and possible futures for the planet.

Starting in 2021, Tuma works with educational and mediation programs at Spanish institutions such as Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Matadero, La Casa Encendida, INLAND, among others.

Yuri Tuma conference is part of the “Co-Ecologies” residency program curated by Carlos Casas. Yuri will also guide the young residents of Fabrica in an experimental workshop entitled “Xenoplay”.
