Thursday 21 July 2022, from 6PM to 11PM, Fabrica opened to the public for Just passing through: 18 works – sound installations, photographs, videos, sculptures and performances – created by the centre’s international team of young creatives at the end of their artistic residency. The program, dedicated to the theme of extinction, is curated by the Spanish director and visual artist Carlos Casas.
Special guest Andrea Lissoni, artistic director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich and formerly curator of the department of International Art and Film at the Tate Modern in London and curator at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan.
How can we imagine possible futures, choose new ways to move forward, learn from the past and engage in the present to adapt to what is to come?
Beyond adaptation or anticipation, Just passing through explores the many responses to the shifts and collapses we are witnessing, whether they are personal or intimate, social, material or environmental.
As the artists affirm, “Acknowledging our contribution to the extinction we may find ourselves in, we began from our own personal stories, inquiries and experiences rather than adopting an approach that positions humans as “the saviors of nature,” or the contrary perspective which sees them inhabit a state of non-action.
This project highlights how the sixth extinction is already happening in many parts of the world and can still occur in other forms, including the disappearance of animals, plants, microbes, ecologies but also architecture, traditions, languages, people and symbols.
Tadao Ando’s architecture becomes the stage for the works, a seventeenth-century villa that harmoniously communicates with a glass and concrete building and which conceals a library defined by AD France as “one of the most beautiful in the world”: a colorful spiral that houses about 10,000 volumes – books, texts and magazines of photography, graphics, architecture, design, art.
