A Perfect House
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a computer technology whose presence has become increasingly notable in everyday life, influencing decisions and shaping perceptions.
A Perfect House aims to depict societal biases, and how AI reproduces stereotyped social structures by drawing information from human-generated digital contents. The artist has drawn inspiration from how his family traditionally sits down for dinner, with the grandfather at the head of the table next to the male relatives, and the women at the end of the table close to the kitchen. Allegretti asked AI to imagine and interpret this scene, generating new images.
The result reveals how this technological system mirrors traditional societal norms and biases, and expands these implications to topics such as racism and war iconography. The project aims to uncover the subtle ways in which AI can perpetuate existing social structures, emphasizing the need for more inclusive and equitable development practices of this system.
Artist’s statement
To develop this project, I got inspired by the traditional seating arrangements during convivial moments in my family, where patriarchal norms dictate the hierarchy. In my work I delve into the intersection of technology and society, focusing on biases embedded within artificial intelligence systems. After observing how the seatings were arranged, I asked various AI technologies to imagine the same setup and noticed how the hierarchy was repeated. This project explores how these systems reflect and reinforce societal structures. I think that these critical issues have become increasingly urgent as they gain more and more relevance in today’s world.
