Longing for Being by Vivek Jain

Longing for Being by Vivek Jain

The longing for belonging brings existential dread with itself.
It converges into the longing for being.

This project is an enquiry into the immortal quest for belongingness, through an artistic research framework that brings forth subaltern histories and weaves a tapestry of multiple temporality formats.

The installation is an amalgamation of different media. It is a cinematic presentation in a spatial soundscape through dams symbolizing borders. The installation draws from expanded cinema as a medium intermingling with elements of archaic storytelling formats like street play and makeshift theater.

The foundational philosophical concept for the exposition is to reiterate that the whole is ‘less’ than the sum of its parts and to never conform to the legacy of monotheistic concepts. The constant aspiration is to move away from easy binaries and the temptation to surrender to a nostalgic narrative of truth outside of politics. It is not a retreat from reality but an investigation of the mess.

Vivek Jain

From Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Vivek Jain (1998) is curious about systems of idea transmission and his work is analogous to practice-based artistic research bridging multiple disciplines. As an audio-visual artist, he explores the entangling narratives of the social, political, moral, and ethical. His creative practice mediates the realization of art that exists in a symbiotic relationship with epistemology. While grappling with the paradox of human existence, the artist aspires to create realities beyond the obsolete logic of progress while bringing forth marginalized perspectives.
